Board And Train Info
Thank you for your interest in our Board & Train program! In our Board & Trains, we dedicate 3-6 weeks to enhancing your dog’s obedience and overall manners. Cost may vary depending on the length of the program and your desired goals. Hosted at our home, your dog will receive personalized training in a nurturing environment!
Why 3-6 Weeks is Ideal:
Dogs typically take about a week to completely acclimate and get comfortable in a new space or routine. This period allows your dog to bond with me and fully show their personality, enabling me to understand them better while they learn from me during training. This bonding time helps me train your dog in a realistic way, providing focused and effective training tailored to their individual needs.
During their stay, we focus on a range of essential commands such as:
Heel - Loose leash walking: This command is crucial for pleasant walks without pulling or lunging. It makes daily outings more enjoyable and safer for both you and your dog. This is practiced thoroughly around various distractions such as other dogs, people, toys, new environments, squirrels, etc.
Sit: A fundamental command that serves as a building block for many other behaviors. It’s useful for gaining your dog’s attention and managing their behavior in various situations, such as greeting people or waiting calmly.
Come - A solid recall command: Ensuring your dog comes when called is vital for their safety, especially in off-leash situations. A reliable recall can prevent accidents and help manage potentially dangerous situations.
Down - Lie down on command with an implied stay: Teaching your dog to lie down and stay in place promotes calm behavior. This is useful in various scenarios, such as vet visits, family gatherings, or when you need your dog to settle down quickly.
Place - Go to a designated cot or bed, lie down, and stay for an extended period: This command is perfect for times such as when you’re cooking, eating, or having guests over. It helps your dog understand boundaries and creates a safe space for them to relax.
Wait at doors and for food: Teaching your dog to wait at doors prevents them from bolting outside, enhancing their safety. Waiting for food instills patience and curbs food-related aggression or anxiety.
Addressing nuisance behaviors like jumping, barking, and chewing: We work on reducing or eliminating common nuisance behaviors that can be disruptive and frustrating. Addressing these issues improves your dog’s manners and your overall quality of life.
Crate training: Crate training provides your dog with a safe, secure place to rest and can aid in housebreaking, preventing destructive behavior, and managing anxiety.
We are also happy to accommodate any specific requests for additional commands you may have. To ensure your dog can handle real-world distractions, we incorporate field trips to dog-friendly locations such as stores (Home Depot, Petsmart, Michael’s, etc.), farmer’s markets, and various restaurants, enhancing their ability to remain calm and obedient in diverse settings.
We believe in keeping you updated every step of the way. Expect frequent updates on your dog’s progress, providing insights into their training journey and behavioral improvements.
Our program is designed not just to teach commands but to foster lasting behavioral change, preparing your dog to be well-mannered in any situation. It’s important to note that while our Board & Train provides an excellent head start, the key to lasting obedience and reliability of commands is consistency in practice at home. To support this ongoing training, the program includes one free group class after the Board & Train session. This class, along with an in-home lesson on how to continue practicing the drills at home, ensures that you have the tools and knowledge necessary to maintain and reinforce the behaviors learned.
I will often recommend off-leash training as a part of our Board & Train Programs. Off-leash training, if completed, allows your dog more freedom under reliable and safe control without the hassle of keeping a leash on them at all times. This includes remote collar training for you and your dog! Remote collar training can be done in several ways and is not required for every dog, but many have benefited from it and love it! If off-leash training is something you’re interested in, please let your trainer know and we can discuss further if its the right fit for you and your dog.
*At least 1 in-home session with a Say It Once Trainer is required before signing up for a Board & Train
